I've worked with youth in a variety of positions and age ranges for more than 25 years. A few of the jobs I've held are: outdoor educator, naturalist, camp director, science teacher, coach, juvenile probation officer, and special education teacher. I work part-time at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, MN, a nonprofit organization that teaches a satisfying variety of old world crafts. And then there's my passion for art and writing. |

From 1998 to 2002, I took a leave of absence from my special education teaching position to develop my art and writing skills. During this time, I wrote and illustrated a twenty unit-curriculum called "Arctic Challenge," a multi-subject, multi-level teaching tool that was used on the website of the International Greenland Expedition. I also created freelance graphics for businesses, organizations, and individuals, as well as selling cards and larger images to stores and art galleries. |

For many years, I dreamed of combining my passions for children, writing, and art in children's books. That dream came true in 2001 when a story I wrote and illustrated, The Raven's Gift: A True Story from Greenland, was released by Houghton-Mifflin. I've been fortunate to have opportunities to create other books since that time. |

The natural environment and the art of indigenous cultures continue to be my greatest influences. Joy, symbolism, and a dash of humor are what I strive for in my art and writing. I live on the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. |
